Touching Lives in Our Communities Enriches Us All Powertek encourages a culture of giving back. Our diverse outreach initiatives touch the lives of many and help make a difference in our communities. Some of the efforts and organizations we support are listed below. Army Ten-Miler Race to Support Soldiers and Soldier Families Powertek is once again (second year running) participating in the Army Ten-Miler (ATM) to show our support for soldiers and their families in our community in the Washington DC area. The ATM proceeds go towards enhancing the lives of soldiers and their families - including new school buses for field trips, construction of recreation playing fields, renovation of bowling facilities, and many other projects designed to enhance leisure activities. Capitol Hill Group Ministry's Fundraising Event: "All Stars Party Night" Powertek is very proud to have been a sponsor of the "All-Stars Party Night", at Nationals Field on July 14th, 2009. The event included the opportunity for children "practice with the pros", tour Nationals Park, and to watch the MLB All-Star game taking place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis Missouri. Since 1967, Capitol Hill Group Ministry (CHGM) has served low-income households and the homeless from all parts of the District of Columbia. In 2008 alone, the CHGM helped over 3,000 households by assisting with job placement as well as providing shelter and emergency food. Local Community Outreach Program Powertek joined with NASA and other organizations by taking part in the 6th annual Techstravaganza – an outreach program designed to encourage middle school girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The event, hosted by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s TWIST (Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology), featured 40 hands-on activities viewed by approximately 1,500 students and parents. A renewed interest in science was sparked by the activities that students and parents described as interesting and fun. Many students even inquired about when the event would take place next year. Dress for Success As a woman-owned company, Powertek embraces the belief that every woman can achieve self-sufficiency and success in her career if given the proper support, tools, and a chance. Through our contributions to Dress for Success, Powertek has helped promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women through professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools. Santa Wishes In the spirit of the holiday season, Powertek has warmed the hearts of others (and our own) by helping Santa answer and grant the holiday wishes of some very special children in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area by donating items ranging from coats to toys. Meals on Wheels Association of America Powertek has donated to the Meals on Wheels Association of America to assist in the social, physical, nutritional, and economic betterment of vulnerable Americans, particularly our senior citizens. Supporting Our Troops To extend the spirit of the holiday season to those who cannot share it with their families, Powertek employees collect such items as toiletries, clothing, games, and snack foods to donate to the men and women of our armed forces serving overseas. Make-A-Wish Foundation of America To help children with life-threatening medical conditions who depend on the goodwill and support of organizations to survive, Powertek sends an annual donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nation’s largest wish-granting organization, which grants a wish in the U.S. every 41 minutes, in the hopes of making a difference in the life of a child. House of Ruth Powertek shares House of Ruth’s commitment to supporting women, children, and families in their greatest times of need. With the monetary donations collected from Powertek and other concerned individuals and organizations, the House of Ruth provides trauma recovery programs, a nurturing housing environment, consistent care, and individualized services to facilitate essential healing and growth for victims of complex and debilitating traumas. Nothing but Nets Together with the United Nations and many other diverse and caring organizations, Powertek has provided lifesaving mosquito nets and installation and operational instruction to families to protect them from the bites of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Doctors without Borders Powertek assists in providing medical and emergency aid to people in the international community who are adversely affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries. Ethical Treatment of Animals Powertek has joined with more than 1.8 million members and supporters to contribute to the educational, investigational, research, rescue, legislation, and special events efforts to ensure the ethical treatment of animals. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Powertek participates in the annual gala of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research worldwide. |
